Raising a phoenix from the ashes

In today’s society, mindless vandalism is an all too regular occurence, but when it strikes at the heart of the airsoft community (and with such devastating effect) it really does come as a shock.

In case you don’t know, I’m talking about Ambush Adventures’ Chobham site in Surrey which was burnt to the ground recently. It was truly heartbreaking to see site operator Charlie James sifting through the ashes of the building which once made up his safe zone. He carried on in the hope of salvaging something, anything, from his site, but it was simply all gone. Ten years of hard work, and all that was left was the base of the building.

The final blow was discovering that the thugs had also stolen everything of value before they torched the place – AEGs, pistols, rental gear, all gone. At this point Charlie was ready to give it all up, but we here at Ai were not going to allow that to happen. The spiritual home of airsoft, here in the UK, gone? I don’t think so! I put a few calls out and working together, the industry have laid the foundations that will allow Ambush Chobham to be rebuilt. Retailers’ and fellow site operators’ acts of generosity were simply unbelievable, and I would personally like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the guys at: Airsoft World, Airsoft Armoury, The Outdoorsman, Viper and TLSFX, but most of all the readers of Ai and the Chobham faithful who dug deep at a recent auction and raised over £600 for Charlie. It’s good to see the UK airsoft community coming together – we really should do it more often – and hopefully, with our continued support, we can help raise Chobham from the ashes and bring it back to its former glory.

Now, by the time you guys read this Ai would have attended its first major exhibition over in the US – The Weekend of Heroes and I can’t wait. Sadly, most Brits will be unable to make it, which is why we’ll be bringing back a full report which will appear in next month’s issue of Ai.

But what about this issue? Well Jay’s looking at something old, in the shape of an AGM MP40, and something new, in the shape of CA’s SCAR – I just hope he doesn’t throw in something borrowed and something blue, because then we’ll all be in trouble! And talking of trouble... resident Young Gun CJ is here with a roundup of his favourite airsoft armour (I hope I’m not letting the cat out of the bag when I say that one featured set won Best in Category in the Ai Reader Awards on page 47). Wannabe has gone all cost-effective on us, with a look at a great impression for the skirmish field that won’t break the bank, and we come to the end of our Tactics for Beginners series with an exploration of the challenges that night games pose. Staff shooters are in full effect with a first look at some major skirmish field bling, and Airsoft in the Real World introduces a new member of the Ai crew, and I’m telling you this is as real as it gets. We are honoured that ‘Donnie’ a serving USAF TACP (United States Air force Tactical Air Control Party) operator joins us, all the way from Iraq! Add to the mix all your favourite features and you’ve got one hell of an action-packed full-on issue.
